AbstractDue to the considerable distance between each floor s center of mass and center of rigidityin plan irregular buildings a great in plan moment induces which makes the floor endurein plan rotations in addition to lateral displacements The floor rotation makes the lateraldisplacements in flexible edges of the plan to increase and in stiff edges to decrease Theobservations after previous earthquakes and also study efforts demonstrated thatdeformation force and ductility demands in plan irregular structures is greater than thecorresponding regular structure Building damages after earthquakes demonstrated that dueto concentrating plastic demand in some regions of the plan irregular structure this type ofbuildings may suffer from collapse even in the first severe shocks of earthquakes Moreover observations of 1985 Mexico and 1995 Kobe earthquakes have demonstrated that in caseswhich the subsoil of plan irregular buildings has endured great plastic deformations thedamages observed in the superstructure are greater than what was anticipated in other words it seemed that soil structure interaction may intensify torsional lateral effects in plan irregular structures So a new field of study on plan irregular structures founded on a flexiblebase was introduced But the lack of accurate real and extensive studies in this field isevident The main reason for this shortcoming is the complexity of solving soil structureinteraction problems So new in the thesis has been tried to introduce a simple engineeringmethod for performing dynamic nonlinear analysis base on substructure method for bi eccentric structures founded on the flexible base under bidirectional excitations To developthis method a step by step procedure was taken into action in thesis chapters First elasticsuper structure founded on elastic soil was studied The proposed method is a form ofUncoupled Modal Response History Analysis UMRHA In order to capture the effects ofnon classical damping properties of soil structure system and also the nonlinear behavior ofthe plan irregular system five independent modal coordinates were used for each mode inthe proposed method Moreover an innovative analytical tool called 5DOF modal stick wasproposed to solve the modal coupled differential equilibrium equation system for elastic andinelastic systems In next steps of the thesis the proposed procedure was developed forinelastic superstructure founded on elastic soil and inelastic superstructure founded oninelastic soil respectively and the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method werecompared to those of nonlinear response history analysis base on substructure method andusing finite element modeling Also in this thesis the direct method analysis was employedto analyze inelastic superstructure founded on elasto plastic soil Considering the greatdifference in time and cost between the direct method and the proposed method and withcomparing roof and foundation response histories of numerical examples of both methods one can conclude that the enhanced uncoupled modal response history analysis with 5DOFmodal stick possess satisfying accuracy and efficiency in analyzing inelastic plan irregularstructures founded on inelastic soil
