Evaluation of combining ability of maize lines derived from CIMMYT germplasm in crossing with temperate lines under two moisture regimes Sharareh Fareghi Fareghi sh@gmail com May 20 2019 Department of Agronomy and Plant Breeding Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran1st Supervisor Aghafakhr Mirlohi mirlohi@cc iut ac ir2st Supervisor Ghodratollah Saeidi gsaeidi@cc iut ac ir Professor of Genetic and Plant Breeding Department of Agronomy and Plant Breeding College ofAgriculture Isfahan University of Technology Professor of Genetic and Plant Breeding Department of Agronomy and Plant Breeding College ofAgriculture Isfahan University of TechnologyAbstractDrought is one of the most important environmental factors that causes unfavorableconditions for plant growth and development affects all morphological physiological biochemical and metabolic aspects of plants and finally decreases crop production particularly in arid and semi arid regions worldwide The reduction of plant yield due todrought stress conditions depends on the severity and duration of the stress In order toestimate general and specific combining ability and to determine the gene action undertwo moisture conditions for agronomic traits in maize 13 inbred lines obtained fromCIMMYT s germplasm were crossed to A679 K166B K18 and MO17 testers usingline tester genetic design A total of 71 genotypes involving 52 hybrids obtained fromline tester crosses 17 inbred lines 13 inbred lines from CIMMYT s germplasm andfour testers and also two check hybrid cultivars KSC704 and KSC705 wereevaluated separately under two irrigation regimes The irrigation regimes were control 100 of plant water requiremen and irrigation based on 65 of plant waterrequirement The experiments were conducted over two growing seasons in 1393 and1394 at Islamabad Research Center of Kermanshah Agricultural and Natural ResourcesResearch and Training Center using randomized complete block design with threereplications In order to evaluate genetic variation in the germplasm used in this study 25 SRAP markers were also used Then according to UPGMA method principalcomponent analysis and cluster analysis were used to classify genotypes The results ofLine Tester analysis showed that there was a significant difference among hybrids lines and tester for all measured traits Also Line Tester interaction was significant forall traits indicating different response of lines with the testers and also the presence ofnon additive effects to control these traits The ratio of 2GCA 2SCA for all evaluatedtraits was lower than one indicating that greater importance of non additive effects ofgenes in genetic control of these traits The results of analysis of variance for seedquality characteristics showed that there was significant differences P 0 01 amonghybrids for percentage of crude protein starch and oil of grains in both normal anddrought stress conditions There was a significant difference for general combiningability among the lines Higher general combining ability for grain yield and itscomponents was observed under both normal and stress conditions for L2 L4 L6 L7
