Analysis of Cancer Cells Collective Interactions with A Game Theoretical Approach Niloofar Fallahkazemi n fallah@ec iut ac ir July 2019 Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor Dr Mohammad Hossein Manshaei manshaei@cc iut ac ir Dr Hossein Falsafain h falsafain@cc iut ac ir Abstract Cancer is one of the most critical challenges today as one of the ten leading causes of death in the world Everyyear most governments spend large amounts of national budgets on research projects to model cancer in order to proposeappropriate treatment protocols The main complicating characteristics of cancer are first its autonomous increasing growth and second invasive expansion in the body which happens by transforming cells and tissues into new areas Cancer initiateswith a randomized mutation and activity of these cells continues by their natural selection and cellular evolution followingthe Darwinian evolutionary principles So far there are many kinds of research in modeling and studying the behavior ofcancer tumors in various fields including mathematics biology physics and computers Most of these models do not payattention to the evolutionary trend of cancer tumors Evolutionary game theory is a method for studying the evolutionaryand dynamic behavior of the cancer cells Many models have been developed using evolutionary game theory which eachof them has some weaknesses and strengths in terms of cancer modeling Each of these models examines the complex anddifferent behaviors of the tumor in terms of angiogenesis drug resistance cellular invasion and metabolic changes in thecells Cancer reactions in the presence of pharmaceutical agents also known as drug resistance is one of the most unusualcancer tumor behaviors that has a similar process with behavior of bacteria Quorum sensing is the process observed in thecollective interactions of bacteria such as biofilm production There are many evolutionary game models addressing cancerand bacterial drug resistance The most significant weakness in most cases is lack of structure and collective interactionsamong cells and also there is not any game theoretical model that proves the Quorum sensing in the cancer population Thepurpose of this study is to investigate the Quorum sensing in cancer cells with a game theoretical approach The quorumsensing which is a collective behavior can be seen in the cancer population We first study the effect of the structure onthe results of the game analysis by studying a basic model with three phenotypes then we use the replicator equationsto examine the number of neighbors of each cell and the Quorum sensing in the tumor In the long run we examined themodel with a four phenotype and analyze the role of the quorum sensing in it This process of analyzing and considering thestructure and behavior of our measurement has yielded results that we can use as suggestions for the design of the treatmentprotocol Additionally proving the existence of Quorum sensing in cancer cells that is presented for the first time withan evolutionary perspective can provide a good view of collective interactions in between cancer tumors which because ofthis behavior in bacteria it can play an effective role in finding appropriate therapeutic approaches Key Words 1 Cancer Modeling 2 Quorum Sensing 3 Glioma Cancer 4 Evolutionary GameTheory
