197 Superstructure optimization of segmental precast posttentioned concrete bridges with box section and balanced cantilever erection through the genetic algorithm Reza Ghiamat r ghiamat@pa iut ac ir rezaghiamat@yahoo com August 18 2019 Civil Engineering group College of Pardis Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranSupervisor DR Morteza Madhkhan madhkhan@cc iut ac irAdvisor Dr Taha Bakhshpoori tbakhshpoori@guilan ac irAbstractThe construction of segmental precast concrete bridge is an increase due to its superiorperformance and economic advantages This type of bridge is appropriate for spanswithin 30 to 150 m 100 to 500 ft known as mega projects and the design optimizationwould lead to considerable economic benefits In this study a box girder cross sectionsuperstructure of balanced cantilever construction method is assessed here The depth ofcross section variable along the span linearly bottom flange thickness and the count ofstrands are considered as design variables The optimum design is characterized bygeometry serviceability ductility and ultimate limit states specified by the AmericanAssociation of State Highway and Transportation Officials AASHTO standard andAASHTO Load and Resistance Factor Design LRFD specifications A program withover 5 000 lines run in Matlab software including code for optimization analysis andstructure design Comparison of the optimum design results obtained with two bridgedesigns one designed bridge and the other a bridge constructed in the city of Isfahan Iran completed in 2017 showed an 8 and 13 percent cost savings in optimization of thestructure and a 6 and 13 percent reduction in concrete volume optimization respectively The sensitivity analysis is run by considering different parameters like span depth ratio relation between superstructure cost span length and concrete compressive strength Theresults of superstructure cost optimization at different compressive strengths show thatthe optimum strength used in superstructure is 40 MPa which results in minimum cost The performance of different genetic operators is also evaluated in the Esteghlal Bridgeoptimization are tournament selection single point crossover and fixed rate mutation areintroduced as Taguchi optimal operators Keywords Segmental precast posttensioned concrete bridge Box girder Optimization Genetic algorithm
