Risk assessment of lead cadmium and zinc intake of human body through ingestion inhalation and dermal absorption of soils in Babel province Iraq Rusol Al Hussein talibru12@yahoo com Aug7 2019 Department of Soil Science Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc1st Supervisor Hossein Shariatmadari2nd Supervisor Majid AfyuniAbstractPollutants are among the effective disrupters of the environment Among them heavy metalsare inherently non degradable with undesirable physiological effects on organisms even at lowconcentrations Nowadays increasing soil pollution with heavy metals and its impact on humanhealth due to increased industrial and urban activities is one of the serious concerns of manycommunities Therefore measurement and monitoring the concentration of heavy metals indifferent regions especially in areas with potential risk of contamination is necessary Inresidential areas excessive accumulation of heavy metals in the surface soil can directly threatthe health of residents especially children through ingestion inhalation and dermal contacts Soil contamination with Pb Cd and Zn is not limited to large cities The purpose of this studywas to investigate effects of the human activities on soil pollution to heavy metals Pb Cd andZn in Babel province of Iraq The geographic location of the sampling sites was recorded byGPS Using random sampling method 16 samples of surface soil 0 5 cm and 11 samples fromdepth of 50 60 centimeters were collected from different regions of Babel The total andbioavailable as well as the stomach solution extractable concentration of the heavy metals weremeasured and the intake risk of these metals through ingestion inhalation and dermal contactwere assessed for adults and children Statistical analysis of data including variance analysiswere performed using a completely randomized design and mean comparison and the analysisof the main components were done by SAS 9 software The results indicated that theconcentration of heavy metals in the soils of urban and rural areas of Babel compared to theWHO standards set for the parks dirt roads main roads and green spaces of the villages are inthe acceptable range The results indicated that the highest total concentrations of Pb Cd and Znare in Bab Al Mashhad region However the concentration of Pb Cd and Zn varied amongdifferent regions The metal emission sources seemed the same and affected by human activitiescaused by traffic and industrial areas The results showed that soil contamination by lead can bedue to human activity in the urban transport sector The concentration of cadmium in the soil ofall studied sites was less than the detection limit of the atomic absorption device The resultsshow the potential harmful effects on the health of children but it should be emphasized that theuse of heavy metal concentrations to carry out risk assessments usually overestimates the truehealth risks In the study the health risk HQ was in an acceptable level either for adults orchildren Key words Heavy Metals Dangerous Diseases Health Risks Urban Transport 62
