Buckling and Free Vibration Analysis of Cracked Rectangular Plates Made of Symmetrically Distributed Functionally Graded Materials FGM Using Both Ordinary and Extended Spline Finite Strip Methods Seyed Amir Razavi amir razavi@cv iut ac ir July 1 2019 Department of Civil Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language PersianSupervisors Prof Mojtaba Azhari mojtaba@cc iut ac ir Dr Saeid Sarrami Foroushani sarrami@cc iut ac irAbstractFracture or cracking is a problem that society has faced for as long as there have been human made structures The fracture problems are mainly divided into two categories the crack growth or crack propagation problemand the problem of analyzing changes in the mechanical behaviour of structures after cracking In the presentstudy in addition to introducing two new numerical methods in analysis of mechanical behavior of crackedstructures the effects of fracture occurrence on buckling critical load and natural frequencies of a particulartype of two dimensional structure namely functionally graded plates with symmetric distribution of propertiesthrough the thickness based on the classical plate theory have been studied The first method which is referredto as the ordinary spline finite strip method is developed by the implementation of the nodal release idea which has been used earlier in the finite element analysis of fracture problems in the formulation of splinefinite strip analysis of an uncracked plate The second one which is called the extended spline finite stripmethod is based on the idea of enriching the finite strip approximation space of the problem The idea ofapproximation space enrichment is the same as that which had developed the finite element method to itsextended type Finally after developing the formulation of the buckling and free vibration analysis of theaforementioned cracked plates based on both ordinary and extended spline finite strip methods the numericalresults of the buckling and free vibration analysis of these cracked plates are obtained compared with theresults of other references presented in the form of numerous charts and graphs and interpreted respectively In addition the rate and quality of convergence of the numerical results obtained from the aforementionedmethods are compared and their sensitivity to various parameters is studied graphically It should be notedthat the parameters considered to present numerical results in this study are crack length crack position through the thickness distribution form of volume fraction of components made the functionally graded plate ratio of plate dimensions plate thickness boundary conditions of plate and direction of buckling in planeloads applied to the plate edges Also all numerical results are reported and discussed in two separate cases ofedge and central cracking Key WordsCracked Plate Functionally Graded Materials FGM with Symmetric Distribution StaticBuckling Free Vibration Ordinary Spline Finite Strip Method Extended Spline Finite StripMethod Nodal Release Approach Approximation Space Enrichment Approach
