Chemical composition digestibility and nutritive value of pomegranate seed pulp and peel silage and using it in Holstein dairy cow nutrition Simin Khorsandi Simin khorsandi@ag iut ac ir September 22 2019 Department of Animal Sciences College of Agriculture Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran1st Supervisor Ahmad Riasi ariasi@cc iut ac ir Professor of Animal Sciences College of Agriculture Isfahan University of TechnologyAbstractThree experiments were conducted to evaluate chemical composition digestibility andnutritive value of pomegranate by products silage PBS using in vitro methods determine the best level of PBS in dairy cows ration and then its effect on transitiondairy cows under heat stress condition In the first experiment investigate the nutritivevalue of the PBS peel and seed 4 1 ratio with or without adding different levels ofurea compared to corn silage CS as the conventional silage in ruminant nutrition Amixture of pomegranate by products was ensiled in mini silos with 0 0 5 1 and 2 ofurea The mini silos were opened after 60 days and then the silage quality parameters chemical composition fatty acid profile and in vitro gas production parameters weredetermined Results showed that PBS had greater dry matter DM crud protein CP ether extract EE water soluble carbohydrate WSC polyphenol compounds andantioxidant activity compared to CS Adding urea at 2 level decreased polyphenol andneutral detergent fiber NDF of PBS Urea supplementation increased punicic acid upto 70 of total fatty acids content in PBS Aerobic stability of PBS was higher than CSand adding urea increased DM recovery The PBS 2 urea had lowest butyric acid Total volume of gas production 24 h GP24 and the estimated parameters in CS washigher than the PBS treated with different levels of urea The current study providesevidence for the potential of nutritive of pomegranate by product with high antioxidantactivity In the second experiment CS was replaced with the incremental levels of PBS 0 60 120 and 180 g PBS kg dry matter in total mixed ration TMR and then thenutrient digestibility and ruminal fermentation parameters were determine using a dualflow continuous culture system Results of this experiment showed replacing of CS inTMR with 60g and 120 g PBS kg DM improved neutral detergent fiber aNDF andacid detergent fiber ADF digestibility TMR supplemented with 120 g PBS kg DMproduced greatest total volatile fatty acids VFA and molar proportion of propionate
