Efficiency Improvement and Torque Ripple Reduction of Single phase Induction Motors Using Two phase Inverters Mohammad Sattavi m sattavi@ec iut ac ir Date of Submission 2020 1 22 Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Mohammad Ebrahimi ebrahimi@cc iut ac irAdvisor Amir Rashidi 315 amir@gmail comAbstract Single phase induction motors have a variety of applications that are widely used in domestic and industrialapplications Start capacitor single phase induction motor is one of these motors which is widely used in evap orative coolers The special structure of this electric motor complicates its control to a high extent Anotherissue is the efficiency of this type of motor which is lower than other counterparts Several single phase motorsare manufactured in the country and are directly connected to the power grid Therefore replacement of thismotor implies a high CAPEX and is fix possible Considering the increasing importance of energy consumptionin recent years providing a suitable way to improve the efficiency of these motors is of particular importance Despite much research in machine design the performance of these motors is not favorable yet These motorsare mainly produced in two speed arrangement and there are three windings in the stator which are called fast slow and auxiliary windings In this motor the auxiliary winding is in series with a capacitor running and allare parallel to the fast winding This winding after start up exits the circuit via a centrifugal suited Therefore this motor operates on a single winding at steady state This results in a high torque ripple and low efficiencyin the steady state On the other hand because the diameter of the winding is low it is not dosiqned to with stand high current and if the swich fails to operate the winding will be damaged In this study the main ideais to improve motor efficiency and reduce torque ripple using a two phase inverter that works in unbalancedmode In the proposed method efficiency of the motor is optimized while the auxiliary winding of the motor ispreserved from any damage With this control method no more winding is required and the centrifugal switchand capacitor no longer exist It is also capable of working at different speeds The motor used in this study ismanufactured by Motogen one of local the most common electric machine many factorers in the market Theproposed drive set is simulated both in the Simulink Matlab software and in the Maxwell software to analyzethe finite element of the motor and investigate the simulated motor core losses Simplorer software has alsobeen used to simulate the proposed drive control system for these motors Incarpoation of both softwares showsprecise motor performance as well as the effect of inverter switching on core losses Keywords Single phase induction motor Two phase inverter Efficiency Two phase induction motor Ripple Torque
