68 Evaluation of breakdown voltage and ignition properties in the Mg BaO2 Ba NO3 2 Graphite PF pyrotechnic mixture Seyed Mohammad Hosseini Department of Chemistry Isfahan University of Technology January 2020Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Prof Mohammad Zhiani m zhiani@cc iut ac irAbstractPyrotechnics are energetic materials composed of fuel and oxidizer in which a lowerburning rate than other energetic materials including propellants and explosives In thisstudy the electrical breakdown and ignition properties of five component magnesium based pyrotechnic mixtures were evaluated This pyrotechnic mixture real sample includes magnesium as the fuel barium peroxide and barium nitrate as oxidizers phenolformaldehyde resin PF as the binder and graphite as the additive In this research amethod for measuring the breakdown voltage and electrical resistance of powders byHRLC apparatus is presented Electrical breakdown in the sample occurs as a result ofapplying and increasing the voltage up to a threshold voltage called the breakdownvoltage At breakdown voltage the electrical resistance of the sample drops significantlyand the insulator sample becomes conductive Also the amount of sample and appliedtorque were optimized to measure the breakdown voltage of five component magnesium based pyrotechnic mixtures According to the results 0 4 g value for sample weight and 8N m torque were selected to compress the sample to measure the breakdown voltage ofpyrotechnic mixtures The ignition properties studied in this thesis include frictionsensitivity electrostatic discharge sensitivity luminous intensity burning rate and thermalanalysis of DSC The variations of breakdown voltage and ignition properties wereevaluated by reducing the weight ratio of each component relative to the real sample andkeeping the values of the other components constant The results show that magnesium asa conductive metal has more effect on the breakdown voltage than other components sothat the breakdown voltage of the pyrotechnic mixture without magnesium is 332V thatcompared to the real sample 23V it has increased significantly The results of frictionsensitivity measurement showed that presence of graphite with low content in the mixture 0 27 wt as well as the presence of magnesium as fuel resulted in reduced friction
