Physiological responses of quince and hawthorn rootstocks to bicarbonate induced iron deficiency condition in nutrient solution Milad Valipour M valipour@ag iut ac ir July 12 2020 Department of Horticulture Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranSupervisor Bahram Baninasab bbanin@iut ac ir Associate Professor of Horticultural Science Department of Horticulture College ofAgriculture Isfahan University of TechnologyAbstractIron Fe one of the most important essential micronutrients needed by plants is astructural component of proteins including important enzymes Iron deficiency is awidespread disorder in plants particularly in those grown in alkaline and calcareoussoils Iron chlorosis is mainly caused by low Fe availability rather than by low total Fecontent in soils Although the use of chelated Fe fertilizers is an effective method tocontrol this problem these fertilizers are very expensive and their use will lead toenvironmental hazards An alternative method to overcome this dilemma which is asustainable and environmentally friendly strategy is to select develop and userootstocks and genotypes that are tolerant of Fe deficiency Quince Cydonia oblongaMill is a Fe deficiency sensitive tree widely cultivated in calcareous soils of Iran Hawthorn Crataegus persica Pojark is used as a quince rootstock in order to reducethe severity of Fe chlorosis in quince orchards in alkaline calcareous soils in centralIran This study was designed in two separate experiments the first study wasconducted to investigate morphological and physiological responses of Fe chlorosistolerant hawthorn and Fe chlorosis sensitive quince cultivars to Fe deficiency anddifferent levels of HCO 3 5 10 15 and 20 mM NaHCO 3 in the presence or absenceof 0 5 g CaCO 3 L 1 in a CO 2 buffered pH 7 8 nutrient solution containing 50 mMFe III EDTA A separate set of two free bicarbonate controls containing deficient 5mM Fe III EDTA and sufficient 50 mM Fe III EDTA Fe concentrations was alsoused In the second part of the present study we studied the effect of the use of sensitiveand tolerant rootstocks for the commercial quince scion in Fe deficiency direct andindirect conditions The treatments used included four levels of HCO 3 5 10 15 and20 mM NaHCO 3 direct iron deficiency 5 mM Fe III EDTA and iron sufficient 50mM Fe III EDTA treatment control The results showed that in quince rootstocksthe vegetative parameters such as plant height and dry weight as well as chlorophyllcontent and chlorophyll fluorescence under all iron deficiency treatments decreased andas a result the severity of the appearance of chlorosis symptoms increased In addition ion leakage and membrane peroxidation because of the decrease in the antioxidantenzymes activity such as catalase CAT ascorbate peroxidase APX and guaiacolperoxidase GPX were indicative of oxidative stress in these plants In toleranthawthorn rootstock although vegetative traits and pigment concentrations decreasedunder direct Fe deficiency condition but there were no significant changes in low
