Analysis Design and Simulation of Wide band Slot Array Antenna using IMGW Technology at Ku Band Sadegh Sarjoughian s sarjooghian@ec iut ac ir June 21 2020 Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor Assist Prof Mohsen Maddahali maddahali@cc iut ac ir Abstract The increasing advance of short range wireless communications requiring high data rates and thelack of available spectrum have driven researchers and industry to move towards higher frequencies in particular to the millimeter wave range The antenna is the most important part of a communicationsystem and the optimum design is the challenge of this frequency range Higher frequencies lead tosmaller sizes of RF components and the implementation of passive components of communicationsystems is difficult at millimeter waves with classical technologies such as microstrip transmissionlines and waveguides Microstrip transmission lines suffer from high dielectric and conductive lossesand waveguides are difficult to combine with integrated circuits and need accurate assembly pro cesses to assure good electrical contacts when made in different blocks Therefore new technologiesare needed in order to design theses kind of systems The new gap waveguide technology has beenrecently introduced as a promising candidate to address some of the problems faced at millimeterwaves with conventional technologies The key idea behind this circuit is based on the possibilityto guide the electromagnetic field along desired directions in the gap between metal plates and toavoid any propagation along with undesired directions In this way any leakage occurring in be tween the split blocks of a circuit with poor quality metal contacts as well as unwanted radiations areavoided This condition is achieved by surrounding a metal ridge strip or groove with a so calledartificial magnetic conductor AMC When this textured layer is placed below an upper metal lid all parallel plate modes will be in the cut off thus letting the propagation only in the air gap betweenthe ridge strip and the upper plate Ridge gap waveguide RGW groove gap waveguide GGW andinverted microstrip gap waveguide IMGW are the different kinds of Gap Waveguide and the bed ofnails is the applied AMC in their structures In this thesis first of all the feature analytical relationsof the bed of nails and the application of that in radar cross section RCS reduction are discussed Then a linear slot array antenna with 16 elements using IMGW is designed and simulated with CST In the last part a coax cable to IMGW transition is designed and the sidelobe level of the antennareduced because this is the most important problem of IMGW based antenna Key Words Gap Wavegiude Artificial Magnetic Conductor Radar Cross Section Reduction Bedof Nails Slot Array Antenna Side Lobe level Reduction
