Design and Implementation of SoftSwitching Converters for Interface Between Inverter Renewable Energy Sources and Battery Mahdi Karimi mail mahdi karimi@ec iut ac ir Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor Prof Hosein Farzanehfard hosein@cc iut ac ir Abstract Today due to benefits of renewable energy sources more attention is paid to the development of power generationsystems based on these sources The most popular and accessible sources of renewable energy are solar cells and fuelcells High step up converter is one of the most widely used converters in these systems This converter changes the lowvoltage solar cells and fuel cells to appropriate voltage level for various applications However the output power of solarcells varies with environmental conditions such as the intensity of sunlight and temperature and fuel cells have problemssuch as slow start up speed inability to store return energy and low response speed Therefore it is necessary to use anadditional energy source such as batteries along with renewable energy sources Bidirectional converter should be usedas the interface between the battery and the DC bus to manage the system power control the charge and discharge of thebattery and increase the life time of the battery In switching converters to achieve high power density minimize the size ofconverter and reduce the number of passive elements it is necessary to increase the switching frequency but increasing theswitching frequency intensifies the switch losses and electromagnetic interface Therefore soft switching methods shouldbe used to decrease these problems In this thesis at first the soft switching converters in renewable energy based powergeneration systems are introduced In chapter II different techniques for increasing the voltage gain of the converter arediscussed Then a review of various interleaved high step up topologies is presented In Chapter III a novel non isolatedhigh step up dc dc converter with winding cross coupled inductors is presented This topology reduces voltage stress acrossthe converter switch and diodes Moreover soft switching condition is provided by one active clamp circuit for the mainswitches In addition to the active clamp circuit the leakage energy is recycled to the output In following bidirectionalconverters are introduced and performance structure advantages and disadvantages of different types of the bidirectionalconverters with soft switching are presented In Chapter IV a ZVT bidirectional converter with simple auxiliary circuitis presented In fact only single switch and a coupled inductors in both operating modes are added to the conventionalbuck boost converter in order to provide soft switching condition Moreover the soft switching condition is independentof variation load and duty cycle The proposed converter benefits from the features of the coupled filter inductor whilethere are no current notches on the current waveform of the low side voltage source Operating principles of each proposedconverter are analyzed and design considerations are provided In order to validate the theoretical analysis prototypes ofthe proposed converters are implemented and the experimental results are exhibited Key Words renewable energy sources high step up converters bidirectional converter soft switching
