Investigating the Effects of Low Resolution Analog to Digital Converters on the Performance of SWIPT Communication Systems Fatemeh Nabi f nabi@ec iut ac ir July 30 2020 Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor Dr Mohammad Mahdi Naghsh mm naghsh@cc iut ac ir Abstract Most recent ideas and concepts in communications such as Internet of Things IoT depend on wireless communi cations Among the main drawbacks of wireless systems are their limitations in reliability and efficiency imposed by theshort battery lifetime of wireless devices Therefore implementing SWIPT has become more important than ever becauseit enables network devices to not only exchange information but also recharge their batteries leading to increased lifetimeand reliability of systems Nonetheless the power consumption of devices also deserves attention Currently the increaseddemand for more bandwidth and using multi antenna techniques has led to a rise in sampling rate and the number of Analog to Digital Converters ADCs which are among components with the highest power consumption in an RF chain Sincethe production cost and chip area of converters increase with the number of bits and their power consumption depends ontheir sampling rate and resolution number of bits using converters with high resolution and speed is not economical interms of their power consumption and one of the methods for balancing the power consumption of systems is lowering theirresolution The current study aims to investigate the effect of ADCs resolution on the performance of a SWIPT based communi cation system whose architecture is based on separated receivers and the use of fully digital beamforming in the transmitter Also the quantization effect is modeled using the Bussgang linear method In this thesis two optimization problems areproseped the first aiming at minimizing transmit power subject to the quality of service constraint along with beamformingcoefficient vectors for the multi antenna transmitter as optimization variables As a non convex QCQP this problem isdealt with using the SDR method but since this method has some losses in general we also explained the iterative methodof MaMi The simulation results indicate that if low resolution converters are used in the Information Decoder receiver toreduce its power consumption the rise in the transmit power at the base station is not significant Taking the number ofconverter s bits into account along with the beamforming coefficients as the optimization variables the second optimizationproblem attempts to maximize energy efficiency from the perspective of the Information Decoder receiver Since this non convex problem cannot be solved considering all variables simultaneously applying an iterative algorithm of AlternatingOptimization is proposed Also in each iteration of this method the MaMi technique is used to deal with the non convex
