Codifying a framework for water resources management in Zayandehrud basin with emphasis on social economic and environmental aspects Sajad Enteshari Najafabadi Enteshari s@chmail ir Department of Civil Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree Ph D Language FarsiSupervisor Prof Dr H R Safavi hasafavi@cc iut ac irAdviso Prof Dr P van der Zaag AbstractSystem dynamics is one of the modeling methods that has become popular in waterresources modeling in recent years due to its ability to consider various aspects of thesystem The first step in developing a dynamic system model is to develop dynamichypotheses or Causal Loop Diagrams CLDs This step poses some challenges asfollows A wide range of knowledge is required to develop these hypotheses theaffecting and affected components in each field are not predetermined modelers developthe CLDs based on their assumptions These challenges may exclude the main affectingcomponents of the system in the models The first step of the present study aims toaddress these challenges through the development of dynamic hypotheses using thegrounded theory approach The grounded theory provides a holistic and comprehensiveview of the system through a systematic qualitative process Therefore to demonstrate theeffectiveness of this method the proposed process was implemented in the Zayandehrudbasin as one of the most complex basins in Iran After developing the hypotheses theiraccuracy was ensured by providing quantitative data It is noteworthy that the proposedmethod has proved satisfactory in showing the main problems of the natural and socio economic system in the Zayandehrud basin and the connection between these problems
