Isfahan University of Technology Department of Textile Engineering Determination of disperse dyes concentration in aqueous solutions Fatemeh Aghamohamadi f aghamohamadi@tx iut ac irDegree M sc Language persian Supervisor Dr Hossein Izadan hizadan2@yahoo co ukAbstractRecently polyester fiber has been widely used around the world This fiber has itsown advantages and disadvantages One of the disadvantages of this fiber is thedifficulty of the dyeing process The most important dye that is applicable on thisfiber is disperse dye Disperse dyes due to their hydrophobic nature have properaffinity to polyester fibers Disperse dyes are usually small and have few polargroups so they are hydrophobic and have little solubility in water The little solubilityof these dyes in water while the dyeing process normally occur in aqueousenvironment causes these dyes not to properly follow the Bouguer Beer law and makes it difficult to measure the concentration of these dyes online In thepresent research three disperse dyes with different chemical structures and molecularweights were used These dyes were dissolved in water with different concentrationof a dispersing agent and with or without being treated with ultrasonic operation Then the absorbance of each dye solutions was measured by UV Visspectrophotometer The absorbance curve of the solutions were compared with theones for dyes in water and in dimethylformamide water 50 50 solution The resultsof the experiments showed that using the combination of ultrasound operation withthe addition of the proper amount of a dispersing agent gives comparable results tothe conventional method for which a 50 50 DMF Water solution is used Keywords disperse dyes concentration determination ultrasonication dispersingagent Bouguer Beer Lambert
