Abstract
The fast-growing, nitrogen fixing, aquatic fern Azolla is a promising novel crop for the production of organic and eco-friendly fertilizer, due to its high protein content, favorable amino acid profile and micronutrient contents. Here, we investigate the effect of Azolla Caroliniana extract on nutrition and growth of tomato (Amaris variety) . The Azolla extract has been applied in two types: A) foliar application and b) application in medium. The treatments of foliar application were included: a) complete Johnson medium as a control, b) Johnson medium + 0.5% foliar application of Azolla extract, c) Johnson medium + 1% foliar application of Azolla extract, d) Johnson medium + 2% foliar application of Azolla extract, e) Half Johnson medium, f) Half Johnson medium + 0.5% foliar application of Azolla extract, g) Half Johnson medium + 1% foliar application of Azolla extract, h) Half Johnson medium + 2% foliar application of Azolla extract. Also, the treatments of Azolla extract application in medium were included: a) Johnson medium as a control, b) Johnson medium + 2.5% medium application of Azolla extract, c) Johnson medium + 5% medium application of Azolla extract, t) Half Johnson medium, c) Half Johnson medium + 2.5% medium application of Azolla extract, d) Half Johnson medium + 5% medium application Azolla extract. Analysis of variance, comparison of the Azolla treatments and application of the extract in tomato growing media were done by completely randomized design with a one-way treatment structure using SAS 9.0 software. The foliar treatments of Azolla extract showed significant effect (p< 0.05) on the fresh weight of the fruit and also a significant effect (p< 0.01) on the dry weight of the root, plant height, root height, leaf chlorophyll, fruit firmness, fruit nitrogen percentage, shoot and Root, zinc concentration in root and shoot, iron concentration in fruit, shoot and root and vitamin C concentration. Different treatments of Azolla extract application in medium have a significant effect (p< 0.01) on shoot height, leaf chlorophyll, nitrogen percentage in shoot and root, zinc concentration in shoot and also significant effect (p < 0.05) on shoot fresh weight, shoot dry weight, percentage Nitrogen in the fruit and zinc concentration in the fruit. In general, the 1% foliar application of Azolla extract treatment and in the 2.5% medium application of Azolla extract treatment showed the highest effects on the tomato measured parameters. The comparison of two types of Azolla extract applications revealed that the fruit dry weight, zinc concentration in fruit and root, iron concentration in root and vitamin C in foliar application were significantly higher than in the medium application. although, shoot dry weight, root dry weight, shoot fresh weight, root fresh weight and root length in the medium application were significantly higher than these parameters in the foliar application. In total, our results showed that foliar application of Azolla extract led to biofortification of the tomato significantly.
