settlements lacking wastewater infrastructure, the need for decentralized and natural treatment systems has become increasingly evident. The present study was conducted with the aim of designing, field implementation, and performance evaluation of a natural TEvap treatment system for household wastewater in Khanabad village, Tudeshk District, Kohpayeh County, Isfahan Province — an area characterized by impermeable soils, lack of active absorption wells, and the direct discharge of wastewater into the environment.
The TEvap system was implemented as a passive unit, without energy consumption or an operator, using local materials including building stone, pumice, zeolite, and agricultural soil, with dimensions of 2.2 × 6 × 8 meters. Almond and barberry trees were planted on its surface to contribute to both phytoremediation and local green space enhancement. The systemʹs performance was monitored weekly over a 16-week period, with sampling and measurement of parameters including BOD, COD, TSS, nitrate, phosphate, EC, total coliforms, fecal coliforms, pH, and temperature. In addition, the impact of Nowruz holidays — as a period of naturally increased wastewater load — was considered in the analysis.
The results showed that the system, under real conditions and without reliance on energy, demonstrated effective performance. A reduction of over 70% in BOD, over 55% in COD, 90% in TSS, 75% in nitrate and phosphate, and over 99% in coliforms was recorded during the monitoring period. A paired t-test to assess the difference between influent and effluent data showed statistically significant differences across all parameters (p < 0.001). Furthermore, during the Nowruz holidays, despite increased wastewater inflow, the system maintained stable effluent quality within acceptable standards.
Overall, the TEvap system can be considered a local, low-cost, reliable, and sustainable solution for household wastewater treatment in rural areas lacking infrastructure. Its simple design, scientifically sound performance, independence from electricity and chemicals, and the potential for using its surface for vegetative cover are among its key features. Based on the results, it is recommended that this system be promoted as a practical model for developing similar systems in Iran and in other countries with similar climatic conditions.
