One of the major challenges across various sports disciplines today is the identification of neurocognitive patterns that contribute to athletic success. A deeper understanding of athletesʹ neurocognitive functioning has broad applications in the design of cognitive training and neurofeedback interventions aimed at enhancing mental performance and decision-making in sports. Such understanding can also contribute to the advancement of sports neuroscience, improve athletic performance, and help prevent mental fatigue among athletes.
The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between electroencephalogram (EEG) signal parameters and cognitive functions, including reaction time, attention, and memory, in male karate athletes compared with non-athlete individuals. The statistical population consisted of active karate athletes and non-athlete participants. A purposive sampling method was employed, and data were collected through simultaneous EEG recording and the administration of standardized cognitive tests. Participants were seated in front of a monitor and performed cognitive tasks relevant to the objectives of the study, while EEG signals were recorded concurrently using a separate recording system.
The results indicated that, based on independent-samples t-test analysis, statistically significant relationships between frequency bands and their mean power were observed only in the fourth memory-related test. The findings suggest that regular karate training may enhance the efficiency of neural networks involved in cognitive processing. Furthermore, a positive correlation with a strong effect size (ρ > 0.6) was found between theta-band activity in the frontal region and memory performance in the athlete group after False Discovery Rate (FDR) correction, supporting the findings of the present study as well as previous research. Overall, the results demonstrate a positive association between continuous sports training and improvements in cognitive performance through alterations in EEG patterns. These findings may be useful in the development of cognitive training programs and the monitoring of athletes’ brain function and performance.
