Low Salinity Water Injection (LSWI) has emerged as a promising and cost-effective
enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technique due to its potential to improve oil recovery while
maintaining environmental sustainability. The objective of this study was to evaluate the
performance of low-salinity water injection and compare it with conventional high-salinity
water injection (HSWI) through numerical reservoir simulation.
A three-dimensional reservoir model based on a five-spot pattern consisting of one
injection well and four production wells was developed using the CMG-IMEX simulator.
Reservoir properties, fluid characteristics, initial conditions, and operational constraints
were kept identical in both scenarios to ensure that the observed differences in performance
were primarily attributed to the salinity of the injected water.
The simulation results demonstrated that low-salinity water injection outperformed highsalinity water injection in terms of reservoir pressure maintenance, sweep efficiency, and
water saturation distribution. The LSWI scenario exhibited higher oil production rates,
delayed water breakthrough, and a slower increase in water cut throughout the production
period. Furthermore, cumulative oil production and ultimate recovery factor were
consistently higher under low-salinity injection conditions. The improved performance of
LSWI can be attributed not only to enhanced pressure support but also to salinitydependent physicochemical mechanisms, including wettability alteration, ion exchange,
and reduction of residual oil saturation.
The findings of this study indicate that low-salinity water injection is a technically feasible,
economically attractive, and environmentally friendly EOR technique. It has significant
potential to improve oil recovery in reservoirs where conventional waterflooding suffers
from poor sweep efficiency and substantial residual oil trapping. Therefore, LSWI can be
considered a viable alternative for enhancing hydrocarbon recovery and extending the
productive life of oil reservoirs.
