Shear flows laden with solid particles are prevalent in numerous industrial and natural processes. The presence of solid particulates and their interparticle interactions induce significant phenomena, including particle accumulation and adhesion within the shearing flow. Such adhesion not only influences the macroscopic behavior of the ambient flow but also engenders measurable modifications in its rheological characteristics. Depending on the specific application and the desired outcome, particle adhesion may be either favorable or adverse. Among the technological contexts where suspended particle cohesion is of paramount importance is the fuel cell industry?specifically, the preparation of the catalytic layer suspension, wherein the state of particle dispersion critically affects both the cell efficiency and its operational durability. Consequently, the primary objective of the present investigation is the numerical simulation of a solid-particle suspension subjected to shear flow, aimed at characterizing the global flow behavior and identifying the governing parameters that influence particle adhesion and clustering phenomena. In the first phase of this study, an appropriate computational methodology for simulating particle-laden shear flows was established. Accordingly, a hybrid numerical framework combining the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) and the Smoothed Profile Method (SPM) was adopted. Subsequently, to generate a periodically sheared domain while eliminating solid-wall effects, the Lees?Edwards boundary condition was integrated and consistently extended within the aforementioned framework. Critical challenges associated with the simulation of periodic shear domains?specifically, particle transit across domain boundaries and corners, along with the consequent perturbations in computed hydrodynamic forces and torques?were systematically examined and rigorously addressed. In the subsequent phase, hydrodynamic interactions among solid particles were modeled via a novel force formulation. The influence of key dimensionless parameters, namely the shear Reynolds number and the solid volume fraction, on particle adhesion and clustering was systematically evaluated. The results demonstrate that increasing the shear Reynolds number attenuates the cohesive tendency, with complete particle separation observed at a shear Reynolds number of 1.2 The volume fraction exhibits a direct positive correlation with adhesion; elevated volume fractions result in a higher proportion of aggregated particles within the computational domain. In a complementary investigation, the relative effective viscosity of the resultant suspension was computed, and the effects of varying shear Reynolds numbers and volume fractions on this rheological parameter were examined. The findings indicate that at low volume fractions, the relative effective viscosity remains substantially insensitive to variations in the shear Reynolds
number; however, as the volume fraction increases, this dependence becomes markedly more pronounced. Finally, the impact of parallel processing on computational efficiency was assessed. It was established that the
present GPU-based implementation reduces computation time by up to an order of magnitude relative to conventional CPU-based execution.
