Objective: Automatic stuttering detection from speech is crucial for developing assistive tools and clinical assessment systems. However, existing approaches based on hand-crafted features (MFCCs) or traditional deep learning models (CNNs, RNNs) often suffer from limited accuracy or high computational cost. In this study, we aim to develop an efficient and accurate stuttering detection model suitable for resource-constrained scenarios.
Approach: This study explores one of the earliest applications of State Space Models (SSMs), specifically the Mamba architecture, to the task of stuttering detection. Two model paradigms are investigated: (1) fine-tuning the pre-trained Self-Supervised Audio Mamba (SSAMBA) on stuttering data, and (2) designing a novel, independent lightweight model called MambaStutter. MambaStutter employs a compact convolutional stem followed by a single bidirectional Mamba layer, projecting each speech segment into a low-dimensional embedding space to model both local spectral patterns and temporal dependencies in speech signals. The models are evaluated on the balanced VCTK-TTS dataset containing 50k audio clips of five stuttering event types (block, prolong, fluent, repetition, replacement).
Main results: In our evaluations on an independent test set, the proposed MambaStutter achieved a test accuracy of 84.80% without relying on any external pre-training. This performance is comparable to, and slightly higher than, the pre-trained SSAMBA model (84.06%), and exceeds traditional baselines such as ResNet18 (83.30%) and Bi-LSTM (77.10%). Boasting only 3.7 million parameters, MambaStutter demonstrates a highly favorable trade-off between accuracy and model size compared to conventional architectures, while utilizing no external pre-training weights.
Significance: This work highlights the potential of State Space Models as an efficient alternative to conventional recurrent and convolutional architectures in speech disfluency analysis. Given its compact footprint and competitive accuracy, MambaStutter serves as a promising candidate for future real-time deployment on mobile devices and edge platforms. Furthermore, the word-level segmentation strategy adopted in this study is conceptually consistent with common clinical assessment protocols, suggesting potential utility for future clinical applications. However, further validation on real-world clinical datasets is strictly required before drawing conclusions regarding clinical deployment.
