AbstractApplication of fertilizer is a major approach for maximum yield although yield qualityand the environmental aspects e g heavy metal accumulation in plant tissues and foodchain contamination should be considered Iron is one of the essential micronutrientsthat its deficiency occurs widespread on fruit and ornamental trees as well as crop plantsin calcareous and alkaline soils Many researchers have reported positive effects ofconverter sludge and slag two by products in Isfahan iron melting industry althoughinformation about the rate of application and the hazardous potential of thesecompounds is lacking For there in this work the optimum rate of application and theavailability of some heavy metals in the converter sludge and slag for com single cross704 were investigated The converter sludge contains about 64 of Fe II and III oxid s and considerable amounts of calcium silisium manganese phosphorus and magnesium The slag also contains 17 iron oxides 52 8 calcium oxide as well as considerableamounts of some other elements e g manganese phosphorus magnesium and silisium The pH and electrical conductivity EC of the converter sludge and slag were 11 6 and12 4 and 0 98 and 3 7 in a 1 5 deionized distilled water extraction respectively Thisresearch is carried out in three farms as Khazaneh Lavark and Shervedan IsfahanUniversity of Technology experimental farms in Isfahan region with a relatively widerange of soil characteristics including available Fe content Treatments were a control foliar spray and application of sludge and slag I 2 3 and four times as much as soiltest recommends based on AB DTP A extractable Fe in soil and the compounds Com Zea mays single cross 704 was planted for the experiment The AB DTP A extractableFe in sludge and slag were 3000 and 5500 mg Kg I respectively applications of the twocompounds increased the soil extractable Fe and Mn in all three farms but the treatmentdid not change the soil extractable Zn Cu and Ni The com yield also increased due tothe applications of the two compounds and the maximum yield was related to L3 L4 S3and S4treatments The relative yield increase was higher in Khazaneh and Lavark thanShervedan farm The L3 and S3 treatments might be recommended as the most properlevels of these compounds as iron fertilizer The foliar application treated the leafchlorosis in Khazaneh and Lavark farms and increased the silage seed and straw yieldin all three farms however this was not as efficient as sludge and slag application Alsoapplications of the two compounds increasedthe Fe Mn Zn Cu Ca Mg and Pb uptakeby com I t j j I u ti l j t
