AbstractIn Spite of availability of different materials for the purpose of replacing in human body because of concerns about their toxicity only some kind of them are virtually used nowadays attempts are focused on improving metals corrosion behavior and biocompatibilityto be used in the body In the present researchtwo following aims were going to be obtained first improving of corrosion resistancean biocompatibility of metals implant and second bone osteointegration and reducing of curing AISI Stainless steel 316L SS was used asmetallic substrate The first step the sand blasted substrate was under gone surfacemodification treatment in 15 H2SO4 at room temperature for I hr then coated withhydroxyapatite by plasma spray process At the second step in order to perform a noveldouble layer composite coating a top a layer of HA was plasma sprayed over a physicalvapor deposited Nb layer on AISI 316L Structure characterization techniques includingXRD SEM and EXD were used to investigate the microstructure morphology andcrystallinity of the coating Electrochemical potentiodynamic tests were performed inphysiological solutions in order to determine and compare the corrosion behavior of thecoated and uncoated specimens as an indication of biocompatibility Results indicate thatsurface treatment technique and hydroxyapatite coating improve the corrosion behavior of3l6L SS The corrosion current defi$ity of surface treated and hydroxyapatite coated SS ecreases Also Doub e layer A Ti coajing o AISI 3 6L SS had a ositive ff ct onImprovementof corrosIon behavIor The decreaseIn CorrosIon current densIty was sIgnIficantfor these coated specimens and was much lower than the values obtained for uncoated Nbcoating on AISI SS also has a beneficial effect on corrosion behavior These resultsdemonstrated that the surface treated and hydroxyapatite coated 3 16L SS and double layerHA Nb coated 3161 SS can be used as a human body implants and two goals includingimprovement of corrosion resistance and bone osteointegration can be obtainedsimultaneously Also cause economical benefits and simplicity and availability of startingmaterials fl r f lrt f t
