AbstractUltracapacitors are a new family of energy storage devices that have many applications inpower electronics Ultracapacitors UCs have 10 times more energy storage capacity thanelectrolytic capacitors In comparison to batteries UCs can provide much higher powerpulses However they can store less energy than batteries Thus combining UCs withbatteries a complete energy storage device can be created which is suitable for high powerapplications Because of UCs voltage variations during charge and discharge modes andvoltage difference between batteries and UCs a bidirectional power electronic interface isnecessary to transfer energy Since the energy storage is usually limited an efficientconverter is required as interface A simple solution is a switching Buck Boost converter In order to reduce switching losses soft switching technics are developed In this reporttwo new resonant switches are introduced which can replace the buck boost switches andprovide soft switching condition Applying these switches to converters would provideresonant condition only during switching transition times If the switch voltage is reducedto zero during switching transition time the switch is called a zero voltage transition ZVT switch Zero current transition switches provide zero current during switchingtransition time In a typical ZVT or ZCT converter switching losses of the main switchreduce but turn off losses of the accessory switch are considerable In the proposedconverter soft switching condition is provided for both switches In addition one of thediodes is eliminated the new Buck ZCT Boost ZCT Buck ZVT and Boost ZVTconverters are intruduced Finally a new buck and boost converter that is suitable forultracapacitor power electronic interface is introduced This converter provides softswitching condition for the entire range of load currents 4 if1tf 1llJ Lf
