I I Abstract Barium titanate as a piezoelectric material is one of the most important materials used in the electronic industry The conventional route to produce this compound is synthesis at solid state In this study the effect of mechanical activation process on the synthesis reaction of BaTiO was investigated The results showed that the rate of reaction between BaCO and TiOT increased sharply in the activated powders and BaTiO was produced at lower temperatures High energy milling of BaCO and TiOT mixtures cause a thin layer of barium carbonate on the TiOT particles and then led to the formation of BaTitO Low homogenization and activity of powders in the unmilled mixtures produce numerous of undesirable phaseslike barium orthotitanate and Ti rich compounds Some of these phases remain in the final production According to the basis of these results a new empirical model for production mechanis of Ti rich compounds were presented XRD analysis of BaOT and TiOT activated mixtures showed the formation of BaTiO at room temperature while high percent of barium orthotitanate was produced in the unmilled mixtures SEM micrographs revealed that BaCO and TiOT mixtures have been agglomerated during t J milling process I f if lI Jt A
