Abstract One of the main componentsof ion mobility spectrometeris its ionization source First and themost usual ionization source is the radio active 63Ni which due to some problems andlimitations has been the subject of being replaced with another sources In this work an alkalication emissive source has been constructed and employed as the ionization source in IMS This source emits alkali ions and ionizes samples via alkali cation attachment reaction Graphite intercalation compounds were used for this source Graphite can store various kindsof species such as alkali ions or atoms between the crystalline sheets to form a class ofcompounds called graphite intercalation compounds In this work the graphite intercalationcompounds were prepared by melting graphite with the appropriate salt at the melting point ofthe salt Then the prepared compounds were deposited on a thin filament heated by anisolated power supply The coated filament with intercalation compound emitted alkali ionsdue to the heating Using the graphite intercalation compounds the emission of Li Na K Csand Sr ions was observed In all casesthe emission continued for severaldays The prepared alkali cation source was able to successfully ionize various compounds including DMMP DMF DMSO and 1 pantanol via cation attachmentreaction In another part of this work ionmobilities relative to that of a reference ion NH4 were measured Then the effect of ionicradius on the mobility was investigated and compared with the Mason Shamp equation In order to do this the relative mobility of each ion was multiplied by a factor of 1 2 For small radii the ion mobility was observed to be proportional to rz and for large radii to roz In another word ion mobility for small radii increaseswith r but for large radii it decreasesso that a plot of ion mobility versus r shows a maximum rJ 0 It A I r I JI U t q
