Abstract Two polymorphisms of titaniwn dioxide anatase and rutile were used Anatase to rutile transformation was studied in with and without milled samples The results revealed that the anatase to rutile transformation was started at 900 C after 2 hours The activation energy of anantase to rutile transformation was obtained 462 kj mol Anatase to rutile transformation was occurred at room temperature in short time using ball milling The rate of transformation has been enhanced by increasing of ball to powder ratio or milling time Anatase to rutile transformation proceeds through an intermediate srilankite phase in milled samples while this phase was not observed in unmilled ones The rate of transformation in planetary ball mill was higher compared with tumbler mill After studying the anatase to rutile transformation titaniwn dioxide and graphite were mixed based on I 3 weight ratios in tumbler mill during 50 hours then studied carbothermic reduction using SOT equipment The results showed that the rutile samples reduce to titanium carbide through T407 magneli phase while in anatasesamples reduction proceeds through TisO9and Ti4O7magneli phases The route of reduction has been changed by addition of iron to mixture of titaniwn dioxide and graphite Reduction proceeds through ilmenite and Ti3Osin rutile iron samples while the amount of ilmenite was very low in anatase iron samples Two polymorphisms of Ti3Os and y were observed in anatase D iron samples while only y Ti3Os occurred in rutile iron samples Austenite was formed as an intermediate phase during reduction of rutile iron samples whilst the amount of austenite was very low in anatase iron samples Ball milling of graphite leads to chemisorbs large amount of gas The chemisorbed gas was released after heating the graphite in inert atmosphere The results showed that ball milling enhanced the carbothermic reaction of titaniwn dioxide because titaniwn carbide was formed in milled samples before 1400C The results revealed that Iron could help to stable Ti3Os reduction in proce t fJllrjf tf J t c
