Abstract In this thesis the effect of fluorescent whitening agent FW A on photodegradation ofpolypropylene fibers was studied First of all polypropylene fibers were treated with FW Aat different concentrations through exhaustion process and then were exposed to ultravioletradiation in the laboratory for various times up to 700 hours A reference sample i e untreatedwith FW A was exposed to compare with samples containing FWA The changes during exposure were followed by whiteness and yellowness indices mechanical properties microscopical tests staining procedure differential scanningcalorimetry DSC Fourier Transform Infrared FTIR The results showed that in the initial exposure times up to 100 hours the rate of degradation or formation of oxidative products such as carbonyls and hydroperoxides during irradiation was decreased in comparison to the reference sample Comparing the samples containing different FW A concentrations by FTIR results itwas shown tl at the rate of degradation was lower for concentrations below 0 2 but thedifferencesafter concentrations higher than 0 2 was not significant The energy of a photon is the inversion of the wavelength of the radiation Since irradiation source used here was in the short wave ultraviolet radiation with a radiationpeak at 253 7nm which is lower than the common irradiation sources used for study of photodegradationi e higher than 290nm Therefore the rate of degradation was more rapid It is expected that if more suitable irradiation source used the effect of FW A in protectingpolypropylene fibers will be more pronounced a L 4 u if tf t I I I 1
