Abstract Sixty four multiparous Holstein cows were used to determine the duration effectof propylene glycol PG oral drenching during 3 weeks pre partum prep and 3 dayspost partum pstp on metabolism animal health milk production and fertility Treatments were 1 water Control 2 1 wk prep and 3 d pstp 3 2 wk prep and 3 dpstp and 4 3 wk prep and 3 d pstp of For every cow 1 5 h after feeding a total mixedration 300ml d PG was drenched orally Milk yield recorded from d 1 to 260 Bloodsamples collected 1 2 and 3 d prep and d 1 2 3 6 10 and 17 pstp Fertility wasassessed using the following measures interval from calving to first artificialinsemination AI days open number of AI for every conception and interval fromfirst insemination to pregnancy PG decreased milk production for Trt 4 from d 1 140 p 0 05 Milk production from d 140 260 did not differ between the treatments RumenpH and fermentation pattern were not affected by PG drenching Insulin and glucagon and insulin to glucagon ratio 2 d prep were not affected by PG drenching Insulin washigher for control group p 0 05 on d 2 pstp but the ratio did not differ betweentreatments Serum glucose was higher in control group in d 1 3 and d 1 17 pstp p 0 05 Other blood metabolites NEFA total keton bodies TG BUN Ca and P were notdifferent statistically Intervals from calving to first AI days open number of AI forevery conception and interval from first AI to conception were not affected by PGdrenching Overall conception rate and conception rate were higher in control group Data do not support any benefit from PG drenching
