AbstractAn experimentwas conductedduring 2004 to evaluatethe effects of planting date anddifferent levels of nitrogen on biological yield and the concentrationof the effectivemedicine ingredients of borage Borago officina is L at the Agricultural ResearchStation in Hamadan The experimentwas comprised of four planting dates March19 March 29 April 8 and April 18 and five levels of nitrogen 0 50 100 150 200 kg ha The experimentaldesign was a split plot in a randomizedcomplete block withthree replications Number of days to emergencewas not significantly affected bydate of planting Plant height plant dry weight the number of leaves andinflorescencesper plant were increasedat late planting dates There was no significanteffect of planting date on number of branches per plant number of flowers perinflorescence number of flowers per plant and percentageof gum and mucilage in different plant organs stem leaves or flowers The effect of planting date on wasmore pronounced on percentage of gum and mucilage of flowers than those ofvegetativetissues The effect of the levels of nitrogen on plant height and number ofbranchesper plant were significant while there was no statistically differences among nitrogen treatmentsin terms of number of secondarybranches number of leaves andthe dry weight per plant There was a significant interaction betweenplanting dateand the levels of nitrogen on the number of inflorescencesper plant the number offlowers per inflorescence and the number of flowers per plant The number of flowers per plant as flower yield was highest at third planting date April 8 in theplots treated with 150 kg ha nitrogen However the most amount of the biologicalyield was obtained at last planting date April 18 in the plots fertilized with 100 kg ha nitrogen As the percentageof gum and mucilage in the plant organswas not significantly affected by planting date and nitrogen level the greatest amount of effective ingredientsper hectareis obtainedthe last planting date with the application of 100kg ha nitrogen 1 l J i I I l f VI MW II W
