AbstractFe TiC and Ni TiC composites were found wide applications as abrasive wear resistanceandcutting tools materials In this work adding of chromium to Ni TiC composite wasinvestigated While Cr has good solubility in both of Ni and TiC so coherency and adhesionbetween Ni and carbide particles will be increasedand coating features of final compositemodified Conventional methods for this purposeare very energy and time consuming In thisresearch production of Ti Cr C in nickel matrix by combustion synthesis SHS route that isa simple fast and cheap method was investigated production this composite high purity Forpowders ofTi Cr Ni C soot were used Nickel content from 5 to 40 wt and CrfTi atomicratio from 0 0 to 0 6 were changed Stochiometric C Ti Cr atomic ratio was used Allsamples were ignited by electric arc and products were evaluated with XRD SEM and EDStechniques Experimental results show that Ni Ti Cr C can be produced by SHS process Solution of Cr in TiC lattice is interstitial and decreases lattice parameter of doublecarbide Inevery Ni percentage a critical CrfTi ratio was found In samples with CrfTi lower than thiscritical value all carbides are Ti Cr C and in sampleswith with Cr Ti higher than it carbidephases are Cr3C2 Ti Cr C Increasing Ni percentage decrease critical CrfTi ratio Ti Cr Cparticles have rounded morphology like TiC but Cr3C2grainsare angular in shape d f j ILI if 1 Lf J 1 V I t o I
