AbstractWhite shades have considerable commercial importance and are used in differentindustries like papers and textiles Considerable efforts have therefore been devoted todevelopment of methods for the assessmentof whiteness Although white shadesclearly occupy three dimensional sub volume of color space whiteness has generallybeen assessedvisually using a one dimensional scale However some disagreementswere reported between visual assessments and instrumental methods In this research the results of visual assessmentsand instrumental methods are examined Followingthis purpose different types of fluorescent whitening agents with differentconcentrations were treated on cotton fabrics Whitened samples were visuallyevaluated with pair comparison method The CIE whiteness formula as uniceuestandard formula was chosen and whiteness and tint values calculated The samplesthat were out of the limits were determined The results of visual assessmentsandthose achieved by formula were compared and reasonable agreement was observed The disagreementswere caused by those samples that were out of limits of CIE 1982whitens index In addition some whiteness formulas were chosen and whiteness values weredetermined These results were compared with values obtained by of CIE whitenessformula and the couelation coefficients between them were calculated Again a highcorrelation was noticed among them Finally a group of fluorescent whitening agents that have different tint values waschosen and the effects of tint on visual assessmentswere examined As it wasexpected the samples with neutral tints were ranked in high level of evaluation d l A t u JiJ l U V J
