AbstractIdentification of human is a goal as ancient as humanity itself The use ofbiometric indiciapurposes requires that a particular biometric factor be unique for each individual that it canbe readily measured an that it is invariant over time Biometrics such as signature photographs fingerprints voiceprints and retinal blood vessel patterns all have significantdrawbacks Human iris on the other hand as an internal organ of the eye and as wellprotected from the external environment ye it is easily visible from within one meter ofdistance makes it a perfect biometric for an identification system with the ease of speed reliability and automation which the iris pattern is complex enough A general irisrecognition system is composed of four steps image acquisition iris localization iriscoding and comparison between different patterns In this thesis the details of differentmethods in all four steps are described and a new novel algorithm is proposed for irislocalization The proposed technique is based on the fact that the pupil is darker than othereye areas The method is translation rotation and scale invariant It is also largelyunaffected by variations in illumination and noise levels in the image and is too fast t 1 I i1 1 V V IJJ I
