ABSTRACT Issuing hard environmental laws by governments and economic considerations in recentyears have caused a great deal of attention toward separationand removal of heavy metals from industrial wastewaters Membrane processeshave been used widely in this field during last few decades due to their relative advantagesin comparison with conventional methods Among these processes Electrodialysis ED with considerable application in desalination ofsea water and water sweetening has been attended more than before for removal or recoveryof heavy metal cations from industrial wastewaters However this process is not very effective for dilute solutions which is due to high electrical resistanceof dilute solutions and occuring concentration polarization A method used to take over these limitations is simultaneous use of ion exchange IE and electrodialysis processes in a hybrid process known aselectrodeionization EDI In the present research EDI in the presence of a complexing agent was used as a newcoupled method for separationof metal cations in a dilute solution with total concentration of 100 ppm To achieve this goal a three compartment electrodialysis cell filled with cationexchangeresins in the feed compartmentwas used and experimental investigation was carried out in two sets of experiments for separationof Fe3 CU2 cations in presenceof citric acid and separationof C02 lNi2 cations using EDTA as complexing agent Taguchi experiment designmethod was used to reduce the number of required experiments as well as estimation of optimum conditions and determination of relative importance of independentparameters During experimental study of the process effects of independentparameters such as flowrate and pH of feed solution voltage ratio of cations concentrations in feed and finallystoichiometric ratio of complexing agent to metal cation cations on the relative separationwere investigated Obtained results showed that the suggested coupled method wasconsiderably successful in separation of cations under study Although statistic analysis ofresults proved that among independentparametersconcentrationof complexing agentand feedflow rate have the most effects on RS To make sure about successof the applied process andto reach a relative comparison betweenthis process and others some experiments were carriedout with same solution at same operating conditions using EDI without complexing agent aswell as ED in the presenceof samecomplexing agents Comparing results obtained from threemethods proved that the new coupled process used in this work has a sensible preferencecompared with two other methods t d V u i1l f V t 1
