f i i l AbstractToday in most networks content of a packet dictates the action that should be done on it Security quality of service control billing upon the packet content and layer 7 switchingare such well known applications Intrusion Detection Systems IDS analyzes the content of a packet in order to recognizethe attacks These systems use pattern matching engines to search the header and payloadof the packet Drawbacks of these systems are the increase of network speed and attacksand the need for a cheaper product That s why algorithms that use the benefits ofhardware to searchthe contents of packets in real time and with the least cost possible arebecoming so popular In this thesis first basic algorithms used in pattern matching based on hardwareimplementations are reviewed Finally according to the characteristics of mostly usedpatterns Aho is chosen to be modified for high speed networks This proposed schemebenefits from Aho and reduces the searchtime 1 ifij f f V Jt J J J
