Abstract There are special types of clays that erode rapidly in contact with water flow even inconditions in which the flow velocity is low These soils known as dispersive soils havecaused serious problems in some projects Hitherto different additives have been used forimproving dispersive soils bll t there is no research about using combined additives Thus inthis research study an attempt has been made to review the consequencesof dispersivity ongeotechnical projects at the first step The effect of different additives on improvingdispersive soils both separately and in combined forms has then been evaluated andcompared At the first stage two areas in which soil dispersivity had been reported were studied These areas are located in eastern plain of Isfahan The first area is in the path of easternring road of Isfahan and the second one is in the route of sewage canal of eastern wastewater treatment plant In the case of easternring road there are some huge and deep cracksand holes on the ground which caused constructional operations to be suspended As thefirst part of this research these field problems have been investigated from the view pointof soil dispersivity and also geological engineering and morphology The reason behindthese problems was recognized to be the activities of a strike in the suburbs of mid dispersive soils The soil along sewagecanal however was found highly dispersive throughprimary tests Thus this soil was selected for conducting more experiments on improvingdispersivity The additives used in this research include lime cement aluminum sulphate andcalcium sulphate which considered both separatelyand mixed with each other By treatingthe soil with each additive the optimum value of each one was determined Further thecharacteristics of the additives and the improvement process after adding them todispersive soil were evaluated and compared Although mixing additives is a known way for improving soil strength it has not been used for dispersivity improvement Therefore after considering the application of each additive separately advantages and disadvantagesof using mixes of two additives were also evaluated The results obtained from pinhole crumb and double hydrometer tests indicate that using aluminum sulphate mixed with limeor cement causes a decrease in the amount of required additive compared with using themseparately The effect of single and mixed additives on the strength of the stabilizedsamples was also investigated Finally other advantages of mixed additives such asadequate strength and flexibility of soil in addition to dispersivity improvement werediscussed It has concll lded that depending on the project type and conditions usingmixture of additives may yield more reasonableresults d t I J1l jI A u JW I W II
