Abstract Cyanide is one of the most hamlful contaminants in environment It is found ineffluents from industries such as gold and silver mining photography medicine and steelproduction When discharged into environment cyanide can result in pollution of soil water and air and threaten humans and their forms of natural life One of the mostdangerous effects of cyanide on humans is its conflict with cell oxygen absorption system Due to these effects it is essential to treat industrial effluents and remove cyanide Recently researchers have used some kinds of plants in order to treat contaminated soils Phytoremediation because of its benefits such as being natural rapid and economical isdeveloping everyday The aim of this study was to investigate the potential ofphytoremediation method as a clean up technology for cyanide removal in soil Also theeffects of environmental conditions on cyanide accumulation in plants were investigated The experimental plants were endophyte infected fescue endophyte noninfected fescueand sorghum which have been used for cyanide removal from contaminated soils collectedfrom Isfahan gold mine and oil contaminated with potassium cyanide KCN A factorialexperiment in completely randomized basic design with 3 replications 4 differentconcentrations of cyanide and 5 kinds of planting were conducted in research green houseof Isfahan University of technology Isfahan Iran Data were collected from plants andsoils after developing of plants and then amount of cyanide was determined byspectrophotometer Data were analyzed by using SAS and SPSS software The resultsrevealed that phytoremediation was a successful method in removal of cyanide andsorghum is the best phytoremediator in all of the cyanide concentration especially at lowlevel of concentration Also the most effective condition for phytoremediation happened inlow level of concentration According to the mechanism of cyanide accumulation sorghumis better than fescue however in fescue another mechanism of phytoremediation waseffective rather than accumulation mechanism t tJ f r At
