f Abstract Revealed comparative advantage can be named as one of the most important sources ofexport promotion strategies in the world It is simply believed that countries enter theinternational trade based on revealed comparative advantage This thesis studies the pattern ofcomparative advantage in Iran as well as all other countries in the world based on Vollrath indexof revealed comparative advantage at the six digit level of HS trade classification including 5487good categories during the years 1997 to 2001 Dynamic changes in comparative advantagepatterns are also identified using an econometric framework Iran is shown to have a comparativeadvantage in a range of products including Vegetable Products Code 2 Mineral Products Code 5 Products of the Chemical or Allied Industries Code 6 Textiles and Textile Articles Code 11 Articles of Stone Plaster Cement Asbestos Mica or Similar Materials Ceramic Products Glass and Glassware Code 13 and Base Metals and Articles of Base Metal Code 15 The result of our econometric study further shows that the comparative advantage patterns of Iran as well as its industries are constant over the period 1997 2001 and the gap between competitive industries and the week ones has been reduced in the products with decreasing indices I t llJt t U W
