AbstractThe modal analysis is one of the existing proceduresfor dynamic analysis of systems Inordinary systemscontaining uniformly distributed damping the damping matrix can bewritten as a combination of massand stiffness matricesand eigenvalues as well as eigenvectors are real values However there are s me casesresulting in non classic dampingmatrices mainly due to a non uniform distribution of damping In suchcases the dampingmatrix can not be constructed by combining mass and stiffness matrices and the eigenvaluesand eigenvectors will be complex valued Theseare called non classicsystems In this thesis two special casesof non classicalsystem namely structure resting flexiblebasesand structureshaving concentrateddampers at certain levels are studied and theirdynamical behavior with respect to classical systems is compared In such a study dynamic equations of non classical systemsare derived using different perspectivesandtime historiesof floor displacements and story and baseshearsare computed Varying dynamical condition like concentratingdamping in specific stories or at the baselevel the sensitivity of different responses calculated An important example is passive iscontrol systemscontaining viscous dampersat different levels With respectto the structureshaving concentrated damper the results for twelve differentnon classiccasesare comparedto the classic case in spectralanalysis For a certain case the abovecomparativeanalysis is repeatedusing time history analysi showing an increase in the responsein conditions Structuresresting on a flexible base are the second system study in this thesis and theirresponsesare compared to the fixed base structures First using spectrum analysis on different soils the period interval of the structuressensitiveto soil structure interactionand that of the structuressensitive to the type of the analysisare determined Then using time history analysis the design spectra are calculated for the sensitive interval Finally application of calculated design spectra for the analysis of flexibly based structures is established 1 J 1 J j Jif v IJ J 1
