Abstract Kellussia odoratissima mozaff is a native Iranian herb which belongs toApiaceae family This plant is traditionally consumed as food and garnish in Iran Thefomler has been used by Iranian as a cough suppressantand a remedy for inflammation hypertension rheumatoid arthritis etc However there are no reports about theantioxidant properties of the plant and this is the first study on its potential source ofantioxidants The antioxidant activity of the methanolic extract from plant wasevaluated and compared with that of BHT ascorbic acid and a tocopherol using invitro models carotene bleaching assay a a diphenyl p picrylhydrazyl DPPH radicalscavenging thiocyanate reducing power and the accelerated oxidation of sunflower oil The total phenolics were assayed colorimetrically by means of the Folin Ciocalteumethod and the total amount of phenolic and flavonoid compound were reported astannic acid and epicatechin equivalents respectively In DPPH and reducing powermodels generally the antioxidant activity of the plant extract was less effective than theascorbic acid but comparable and greater than a tocopherol and the syntheticantioxidant BHT Although in carotene bleaching assay the antioxidant activity ofBHT is greater than the plant extract but difference was not significant p 0 01 Whileascorbic acid was shown to have lower activity in this assay The activity of plantextract at various concentrations in thiocyanate model system was lower than BHT butsignificantly greater than a tocopherol Methanolic extract inhibited more efficiently theoxidation of sunflower oil at 60 f 3 C than BHT for 14 days The essential oil of plantwas isolated by water distillation using a Clevenger type apparatus GC MS analysesof the oil resulted in the identification of 16 compounds and the most component whichidentified in the essential oil had terpene structure which is reported to haveantioxidant properties Therefore this plant c ould have antioxidant properties that referto its phenolic compounds it j lJ llrJ v r J 11
