Abstract For long term productivity of agroecosystems protection of the environment it andis necessaryto develope and implement management strategiesthat maintain the qualityof soil Understanding the effect of manure and inorganic fertilizer on N mineralizationand nitrification in soils is crucial for a better assessment N fertilizer requirements in oforder to minimize nitrate contamination of surface and groundwater resources For thispurpose soil samples were collected from 0 20 20 40 40 60 60 S0 and 80 100 cmdepths of previously manured and chemical fertilizer and control plots of a silty clayloam calcareous soil fine loamy mixed thermic typic Haplargid The soil had beentreated with 0 50 and 100 Mg ha 1 year l manure and chemical fertilizer 250 kg ha lyear l ammonium phosphate and urea for 5 consecutive years since 1999 The soilsampleswere air dried and then passedthrough a 2 mm sieve Soluble organic nitrogen N mineralization nitrification potential L glutaminase and L asparaginase activitywere determined Compared to the control and chemical fertilizer treatments 100 Mgha 1 year I manure applied soil significantly increasedthe ammonia concentration andorganic carbon in 0 40 cm depth The nitrate concentrationin O SO depth of 100 Mg cmha 1 year I has been significantly higher than those of the control and the chemicalfertilizer treatments soluble organic N showed to be heavily affected by the manureapplication Both levels of manure applicationsenhancedSON through the soil profile Net N mineralization rates were increased in 0 20 cm depth in100 Mg ha l year lmanure applied soils and remained unaffected in higher depths Nitrification rate andnitrification potential were significantly higher in 100 Mg ha l year l manure appliedsoil respectly in 0 60 cm and O SOcm depth other treatments Enzymes activity weresignificantly enhanced in the 0 40 cm depth in both levels of manure application 50and 100 Mg ha l year I comparedto the other treatment Soluble organic nitrogen waspositively correlated with nitrate r 0 79 net N mineralization rate r 0 53 nitrification rate r 0 71 nitrification potential r O S and enzymes activity r O 79 It is concluded that SON is a mobile form ofN which accumulate in higherdepths Since the enzyme activities could not be detected below 40 Cm SON willpresumably non biodegradablein higher depths be J iJ l lIJ J l i I I j
