Abstract A wide range of application of vanadium has been known specifically in iron andsteel making industry Because of lake of the primary sources of this element extractionand recovery of vanadium from the secondary sources must be noticed Steel makingconverter slag is one of the major secondary sources of vanadium In this investigation vanadium recovery from the steel making converter slag has been studied Salt roasting basic leaching are the processeswhich applied to separateand extract vanadium from steelmaking slag This slags after mixing with determined values of sodium carbonate andpelletizing were roasted In this study the effect of some parameters such as T t Weightpercent of added sodium carbonate and the size of pellets for roasting process wereoptimized It has been found that Roasting temperature is the most important parameter onthe amount of extracted vanadium The size of pellets has a little effect on the efficiency ofprocess The optimized value of T t and weight percent of sodium carbonate in theroasting process is found to be 1000 C 60 min and 10 respectively In the leachigprocess the effect of T t concentration of leachant and particle size have beeninvestigated It is determined that sodium carbonateis the major leaching agent in comparewith NaOH in the leaching of roasted slag It is suppose that the reaction of vanadium solution is a fIrst order reaction Chemical reaction model has been found to represent allthe experimental results satisfactorily The value activation energy of reaction equals to 41kj mol According to the experiments rate constant has a relation with opposite of particlesize The optimized parameters for leaching process is 80 C 60 min sodium carbonate with a concentration of 40 gr lit NaOH with a concentration of 10 gr lit and particle size between 100 to 120 mesh determined By application of this optimized parameters morethan 80 of vanadium is recovered t J Ii I j i i Lf t VtJ
