AbstractThere are several methods for producing electrically conductive fibres In this work coating of acrylic fibres with copper sulphide was investigated Surface of the acrylicfibres were coated with an insoluble conducting copper sulphide layer Dipping method ofcoating was carried out in one step Acrylic fibres were treated in a bath containingdivalent copper ions a reducing agent which is capable of reducing the divalent copperions to a monovalent copper ions and a sulfur containing compound Dry and wet spunstaple acrylic fibres with different linear dencities were used in the above procedure Above treatments resulted in a reduction of electrical resistance from 1013 102 Q square toIn this researchthe influence of some parameters such as concentration of copper sulphate hydroxylamine sulphate sodium thiosulphate iron chloride III and temperature oftreatment bath were studied In this work also a second reducing agent such as sodiumdithionite was used to improve the electrical conducting of the fibres The results obtainedshows that the coating of acrylic fibres with copper sulphide has little influence on thetenacity and elongation of the treated fibres This fibre treatment produced good anti bacterial properties as well The amount of reacted copper was measured by atomicabsorption technique The surface properties of the coated acrylic fibres were studied byScanning Electron Microscopy SEM d t j Ii v V IJ III
