Abstract Security is one of the main concernsof the human race Personal identification is one thepreliminary steps to fulfill this purpose Fingerprint recognition is a feasible tool for this aim Since fingerprint images are used for identification and security purposes their processing isof significant importance Two critical steps in fingerprint image pre processing are binarization and thinning Binarization through which the amount of data in the image is reduced results in not onlydecreasein the size of the required memory but also increase in the speedof processing Onthe other hand the thinning process can speed up the minutiae extraction process In additionto the mentioned stages by using a morphological stage after binarization false detectionoccurrences significantly reduce In a real time fingerprint image pre processing speed is one of the main bottlenecks Software routines have their own limitations therefore a new architecture based on pipeline structure has beenproposed in this thesis for real time fingerprint image pre processing f t fJ li fi tr V l IJJ t
