AbstractWater resourcesare limited in arid and semi arid regions Therefore there is a need to useeffluent and low quality water sources such as treated wastewater TW for irrigation ofturf grass and landscapes Application of TW changesthe characteristics of soils therefore special managementis required to obtain high quality turfgrass by such an irrigation andits effects on soil characteristics and plants should be evaluated In this research the effectsof advancedtreated wastewaterof Shahinshahr WastewaterTreatment Plant was studied onfive varieties of Zoysiagrass as well as its effects on soil for a period of 10 months Stolens of Zoysiagrass were planted in plastic pots containing sandy loam loam or clayloam in August 2004 The pots were irrigated with municipal water until establishment Thereafter water requirement of each pot was calculated based on weighing the pots toreplenish the consumed or evaporated soil moisture Irrigation treatments werecombinations of different percentagesof water anaTW 100 water 75 water and 25 TW 50 water and 50 TW and finally 100 TW Statistical design was completelyrandom design with factorial arrangement having three factors percentage of mixture ofwater and TWas the main factor soil texture as sub factor and turf grass variety as the sub sub factor The results indicated that using TW for irrigating turfgarss improved its color and turf irrigation with mixture of 75 TW and 25 water had the best color scale 5 outof 9 The Zoysia matrel a varieties had better color than Zoysia japonica varieties The best color 5 73 belong to DALZM3 variety irrigated with TW The best turfgrass colorwas seen in sandy loam 5 07 using 75 TW and 25 water in loamy soil 5 06 using 100 TW and in clay loam soil 5 17 using 100 TW Using TW increasedyield per potand turf grass height Maximum height 9 08 cm was obtained by using the mixture of75 TW and 25 water and maximum yield 10 07 g dry matter per pot was obtained in irrigation with 100 TW The turfgrass varieties had higher yield 4 55 g per pot in loamy soil than sandy loam 3 48 or clay loam 3 59 But plant height was not affected by soiltexture Irrigation of turfgrass with different percent of TW changed soil characteristics significantly Using TW increasedN organic matter P Na and EC of soil significantly as compared to water while K Ca pH Mg Zn and Pb was not affected Soil Fe was higher in water treatments as compared to TW treatments Chemical analysis of turf grassesshowed that N K Ni and Co absorption increasedby increasing TW percent Absorption of Fe Cd and Zn was not affected Absorption of Pb was decreased but this decrease was not significant between 100 TW and combination of 50 TW and 50 water treatments Soil texture was important in absorping heavy metals such that Cd Co and Ni absorption was maximum in sandy loam and minimum in loam Absorption of Fe was not affected by soil texture The overall conclusion is that using TW for irrigation of turfgrass is promising and if proper irrigation managementis applied there would be no negative effects on soiland grass L I u liI l Lf V l JI Jj
