0AbstractNational statistical offices face an increasing demand for the dissemination of microdata This trend can be at variance with the care taken not to disclose data about individuals Protection against disclosure is an important assuefor statistical agenciesreleasing micro data Therefore the risk of disclosure of each microdata set to be releasedshould be assessed In order to assessthe risk of disclosure we imagine the attempt at disclosure takes placeaccording to a specified senario We assumethe existence of a hypothetical intruder howattempts to use the microdata to disclose information about units in the population This thesesdescribesthe disclosure problem and explains why it is a real problem Simple Imeasuresof disclosure risk can provide useful evidenceto support decisions about release If this risk is too high measureshave to be taken to protect the data set Using the conceptof uniqueness some theory is developed that can be help establish the risk of identification After calculation the risk of disclosure we can use microdata statistical disclosure con trol SDC Microdata SDC attempts to protect the privacy of individual data in releaseddatasets r tJ1i ti v r I II III
