Abstract Purpose of this project was extraction of high purity naphthalene from fuel oils producedin Iranian petrochemical complexes Fuel oils with considerable amount of naphthaleneare low value by products of olefin units in petrochemicalcomplexes These are known ascracked fuel oil CFO has naphthalene content of 13 31 In this project CFO of Arakand Tabriz petrochemical complexes were used as feed for our experimental work TheseCFO s have high boiling point and are mostly consisted of aromatic components andnaphthaleneis one of the volatile aromatic componentsamong them In this work the feedwas initially distilled by using direct steam and due to reduction of boiling pointtemperature volatile components including naphthalene were separated withoutsublimation Since aromatic componentshave negligible solubility in water the product ofthis stage was easily divided into two separateaqueousand organic phases Naphthalenein the separatedorganic phase was extracted by methanol to gain a high purity product Methanol as solvent can dissolve naphthalene whereas other impurities in the organicphaseproduced in the first stage are mostly insoluble in methanol Extracted naphthalenewas separatedfrom methanol by adding sufficient amount of water to the solution Waterand methanol mixture make no azeotrope and therefore can be easily separatedto itscomponents by simple distillation This fact gives the opportunity of reusing methanol Inthe defined conditions of the experiments 90 96 percent of naphthalene in the initial feedwas extracted with the purity of 96 99 weight percent for naphthalene iJ 1t IIIt 1i tI i r I
