ABSTRACTVery often when a signal exhibits some periodicity it is modeled by a single or acombination of sinusoids buried in noise In such a modeling signal characteristicsincluding amplitudes phases and frequencies may also vary with time Estimation of thefrequencies and extraction of the individual sinusoidal components of such a signal provideuseful information about the signal and therefore provide means for signal analysis Introducing algorithms capable of decomposing such a signal into its individual frequencycomponents is an active subject of research and finds applications in various branches ofengineering In this thesis a modified adaptive notch filter ANF scheme is proposed thatdirectly estimates the frequency of sinusoidal signals The ANF is a second order notchfilter that is further furnished with a nonlinear differential equation to update thefrequency This scheme is then extended to a structure composed of n coupled paralleledANFs that estimates directly the frequencies of a signal composed of n sinusoids andextracts its sinusoidal components Moreover this scheme is extended to an arrangementwhich is capable of estimating the fundamental frequency of a signal composed of nharmonically related sinusoids and of separating it into its constituent components Mathematical properties of the differential equations governing these algorithms arepresented The orders of these differential equations are 3n and 2n 1 respectively Detailed stability analysis of both proposed algorithms is carried out on the basis of localaveraging theory under the assumption of slow adaptation An extensive study for theparameters adjustment of the proposed algorithms is also presented Simulation resultsverify the validity of the presented algorithms and confirm their desirable transient andsteady state performances as well as their desirable noise characteristics The proposedalgorithms exhibit a high degree of immunity with regard to both external noise andinternal parameters setting while offering structures crucial for real time applications
