Abstract In order to compare and evaluate the rate of growth and reproduction in two quail strains Coturnix Japanese and Coturnix ypisilophorus Range quail in breeding conditions in housewas studied through three trials In the first trial to estimate the genetic parameters single traitand multi trait method comparing growth slaughter and carcass characteristics 32 pairs ofJapanese quails and 26 pairs of Range quails were randomly selected from the base populationof parents 1000 quails One male and one female quail in an individual one tier cageperformed the mating The birds were wing banded according to the cage number The eggswere collected through 5 periods of 10 days 50 days and the collected eggs were marketedaccording to parents number and were set in incubator 347 Coturnix chickens and 295 Rangechickens which were hatched from 1 to 63 days of age were weighted In 49 days of age 5hatches and 63 days of age 3 hatches from each strains 10 male and 10 female wereslaughtered and carcasses were separated In second trial from the population of parents 500quails randomly were selected for 4 groups and in order to produce fertile eggs every group at aone male to 3 female ratio were kept in separate pens Fertility eggs in each group were hatchedin 5 hatches From each group in every hatch 50 chickens after attaching the wing number weretransferred in house and breeded To compare the growth body weight from 1 to 63 days of ageweekly and individually was recorded In order to determine the feed conversion feed intakeweekly and collectively was measured and to evaluate slaughter and carcass characteristics in49 days of age from each group 10 quail 5 male and 5 female randomly were slaughtered in 2hatches In third trial to compare reproductive traits in two quail strains 2700 eggs were satfrom six hatches in the incubator and fertility hatchability chicken weight and shell weightwere determined The result of first trial showed that heritability coefficient of body weightfrom 1 to 63 days of age through single trait method in Coturnix quail are from the least amount 0 114 0 107 for body weight in 49 days of age up to maximum amount 0 482 0 254 forbody weight in 1 day of age In Range quail the maximum of heritability coefficient 0 567 0 312 for body weight in 1 day of age and the maximum amount 0 151 0 154 forbody weight in 14 days of age was estimated For slaughter and carcass characteristics themaximum of heritability coefficient through single trait method in Coturnix quail carcassweight without viscera 0 438 0 155 and the maximum amount 0 031 0 090 for best percentwere calculated In Range quail thigh weight with coefficient showed 0 787 0 406 themaximum amount and gizzard liver and heart weight with coefficient 0 004 0 104 showedthe minimum amount Genetic correlations between body weight in different ages and geneticcorrelation between body weight and carcass weight were all positive and high Environmentalcorrelation between studied traits showed the positive and negative amount from low to high Body weight of Coturnix at 7 to 56 days of age was significantly better than Range quail P 0 01 Body weight of female from 42 days of age were significantly higher than males P 0 01 but body weight at 56 days of age were not significantly different P 0 05 Slaughtertraits in 49 days of age were calculated that between two strain all of the traits were significantlydifferent except thigh weight and breast percent P 0 01 Breast weight at 49 and 63 days ofage in two strains were not significantly different but breast percent at 49 days of age wassignificantly higher than 63 days of age P 0 01 The other traits at 63 days of age had asignificant difference against 49 days of age P 0 01 The result of second trail showed that theaverage feed intake in 4 groups from 1 to 49 days of age was 11 94 0 48 gr per day that werenot significantly different among Coturnix Range and H1 P 0 05 while H2 was higher thanthe other groups P 0 01 The average of daily
