Abstract The main purpose of this research work was to illustrate the extent of hydrolyticdegradation of PET caused by warm water and also to separate the influence of moisture temperature and orientation in the degradation process To achieve this purpose thermaland hydrolytic degradation of PET Partly Oriented Yarn Fully Drawn Yarn and chips attemperatures above and bellow Tg were carried out using a water bath and an electricaloven Technical methods such as determination of the moisture content densitometery viscometric analysis carboxylic end group titration FTIR and x ray diffraction were usedto analyse the degradation of PET The results obtained from different analysis show that the main cause of degradation iscarried out by moisture and heat on its own has a minor effect Degradation at lowertemperatures were less prominent and was increased noticeably above Tg Crystallinityplays a significant role in preventing hydrolytic degradation as the extent of degradationwas increased from FDY to chips to POY X ray diffraction analysis showed thatcrystallinity was increased from POY to chips to FDY Determination of intrinsicviscosity molecular weight based on viscosity Mv molecular weight based onweight Mw molecular weight based on number Mn chain scissions and carboxylic endgroup analysis were the main quantities for the degradation measurement
